Resize and advanced settings
Re-encoding removes the common metadata blocks this tool can verify. ICC profiles are not copied by the current raster pipeline, which can change color appearance. Proprietary metadata varies by format.

How to use compress gif
- Select one or more files or drag them into the upload area.
- Review the detected format. A mismatch between the file signature and its name is rejected for safety.
- Choose the output format, quality, optional target size, and resize settings that apply to this task.
- Enable first-frame or first-page extraction only when you understand that additional animation frames or pages will not be preserved.
- Process the batch, compare each result, then download individual files or a ZIP.
What compression changes
Compression is a tradeoff between file size, dimensions, format features, and visual fidelity. Lossy JPEG, WebP, and AVIF output uses the selected quality as an encoder instruction rather than a universal percentage of visible quality. Two images at the same setting can produce very different file sizes because flat illustrations, photographs, grain, text, and transparency compress differently.
PNG is handled differently. Its normal output is lossless, so a JPEG-style quality slider is not presented as a guarantee of stronger PNG compression. Removing ancillary data and resizing can reduce a PNG, but a strict target may require fewer pixels or conversion to WebP or AVIF.
Practical example
Suppose a GIF file is too large for a website or message. Start with an 82% quality setting, keep the original dimensions for the first run, and compare the preview and output size. If it remains too large, set a maximum width that matches its real display size. For a fixed upload limit, add a target size and let the bounded search find the closest candidate. Keep the original file separately so you can return to it later.
Supported behavior for this page
- Input: GIF
- Output: GIF
- Batch limit: 30 files, 50 MB per file, 300 MB total.
- Safety limit: decoded dimensions are checked before large pixel buffers are created.
- Metadata: reading and removal vary by format; raster cleanup uses re-encoding.
Frequently asked questions
Are compress gif images files uploaded?
No. Selection, decoding, processing, preview creation, and downloads happen inside your browser. Ordinary page requests still go to the hosting provider.
What formats work with this tool?
The advertised inputs are GIF, with outputs including GIF. The tool checks file signatures instead of trusting only the filename.
Will the output be exactly the requested size?
Compression results depend on image detail, dimensions, format, and encoder. Exact sizes are not promised unless the resulting bytes happen to match.
Does processing remove metadata?
Raster re-encoding removes the common metadata blocks this tool can verify. SVG uses sanitization. Proprietary blocks and color-profile behavior vary, so sensitive results should be checked before sharing.
