How to use compress heic

What compression changes
Compression is a tradeoff between file size, dimensions, format features, and visual fidelity. Lossy JPEG, WebP, and AVIF output uses the selected quality as an encoder instruction rather than a universal percentage of visible quality. Two images at the same setting can produce very different file sizes because flat illustrations, photographs, grain, text, and transparency compress differently.
PNG is handled differently. Its normal output is lossless, so a JPEG-style quality slider is not presented as a guarantee of stronger PNG compression. Removing ancillary data and resizing can reduce a PNG, but a strict target may require fewer pixels or conversion to WebP or AVIF.
Practical example
Suppose a HEIC file is too large for a website or message. Start with an 82% quality setting, keep the original dimensions for the first run, and compare the preview and output size. If it remains too large, set a maximum width that matches its real display size. For a fixed upload limit, add a target size and let the bounded search find the closest candidate. Keep the original file separately so you can return to it later.

Will the output be exactly the requested size?
