What conversion preserves—and what it may change
The browser decodes the source into visible pixels, applies orientation and optional resizing, then encodes a new file. This reliably changes the container format but cannot preserve every format-specific feature. Color profiles, uncommon bit depths, animation, multiple TIFF pages, and HEIC sequences need special attention.
Transparency is preserved when the selected output supports an alpha channel. When converting to JPEG, transparent pixels are composited over the chosen background color—white by default—because JPEG cannot store transparency.
Practical example
Suppose a AVIF file is too large for a website or message. Start with an 82% quality setting, keep the original dimensions for the first run, and compare the preview and output size. If it remains too large, set a maximum width that matches its real display size. For a fixed upload limit, add a target size and let the bounded search find the closest candidate. Keep the original file separately so you can return to it later.
