The shipped still-image encoder preserves alpha, and the browser test inspects that property in a generated AVIF.

Will every PNG become smaller?

No. Very small or simple indexed PNGs can already be highly efficient.

Is the codec downloaded from another company?

No. Fingerprinted JavaScript and WASM assets are served with this static site.
